Reflections from Women with Drive Pikes Peak
Just because our gender is female does not indicate we are any less capable or less deserving of sponsorships. Every woman I know out there competing in and Olympic, Paralympic or non-Olympic sport works their hardest and recent Parity research shows that women athletes are regarded as societal role models, because of what they sacrifice and work towards accomplishing. I have seen the change and the movement grow, but it takes us all to help build and support one another to make this happen.
Leadership and Legacy: Naya Tapper's Impact on USA Rugby
That’s perhaps why she was so shocked when captain Lauren Doyle asked Naya to help her turn the captaincy into a shared position. Naya said she would agree to the co-captain role on one condition: that Lauren would have difficult conversations with her. She would never be a “yes man” to Lauren, or anyone else. Lauren agreed, and together they challenged the team, the staff, themselves and the culture, to build something better.
Chasing Dreams and Degrees: Life as a Student and Paralympic Athlete
On the day of the Paralympic Team announcement, I was on the Zoom call waiting for my name to be announced; and just like that, I made my first Paralympic team at the age of 18 and was the youngest wheelchair racer on the U.S Tokyo Paralympic Games team. I qualified to race in the 100 meters and 400 meter events. I spent the entire summer leading up to the Games training and doing interviews with local news stations in my community to share my story.
The Hidden Job of Elite Athletes: Mastering Mental Challenges
“I’m done” I said through sobs as tears soaked my shirt. “I don’t want to do this anymore. I’m not good enough to do this.” Andrew, my rock of a husband, and I were sitting in the sunroom of the house we were staying at in Silver City, New Mexico. We were there for the 30th Edition of the Tour of the Gila, me to race and him to be the bicycle mechanic for the team. It was a five-day stage race, in which you had to make the time cut to compete in the next stage. As the sun started to paint pink and orange across the desert sky, the idea that I wouldn’t be toeing the line for stage two with the other ladies making themselves dinner in the kitchen was sinking in.
From a Moment to a Movement: Reflecting on “Women With Drive” at Miami F1
Ten years ago, I could’ve counted all active female racers on one hand. Today, I can only name a fraction of them. How did we get here? And more importantly, where do we go from here?
When to Grit and When to Quit
Erin told her parents she wanted to be an Olympian when she was just six years old. Trusting their daughter’s intuition, Erin’s parents put her in ballet and gymnastics, which gave her an early taste for discipline and body awareness, both of which would serve her in her later career.
I Thought it Was Just Me — The Lonely and Often Isolating Road as an Olympic Athlete
I felt out of place or put on a pedestal as an Olympic hopeful athlete. If I didn’t have a type of food or drink at a gathering I was asked, “Oh can you not have that as an Olympic athlete, is it against your ‘diet’?” and if I had a drink or a food that wasn’t deemed “healthy,” I was greeted with shock and statements like, “Can you have that?” or, “Are you allowed to have that?" as if I was supposed to be immune to enjoying myself or not fitting into the designated prototype of an Olympic athlete.
Reclaiming My Light: Navigating the Darkness of Sexual Assault in Sport
Sexual assault thrives in silence and secrecy, but by sharing my story, raising awareness, and demanding accountability, I hope to create a safer and more inclusive environment for athletes of all genders. Together, we can dismantle the culture of silence and cultivate a culture of empowerment and support.
I Chose to Represent My “Other” Country
I heard so many people say, “You took the easy road out to make the Nigerian Olympic team, because Team USA is one of the hardest teams to make in the world.” Let’s dissect that real quick.
Body Dysmorphia in the Female Athlete
Social media magnifies the pressure for female fitness entrepreneurs to maintain a “perfect physique,” showcasing a never-ending array of flawless bodies, faces, and hair.
The Lonely World of Women's Outdoor Sports
When it comes to outdoor and extreme sports, women often find themselves at the top of a game few are playing. They’ve become so specialized that sharing a workout with someone becomes really tricky: often, to train with other women is to pump the brakes. Women who become experts in these sports often have to wait for big competitions to compete against their equals in talent or skill. To find someone who is the perfect training partner on a daily basis is much more difficult. This often leaves women as the “only” in their training groups (if they have one), and a pressure to be a representative of women.
From Heartbreak to Perseverance: How to Navigate a Divorce as a Professional Athlete
In my attempt to balance a professional sports career, military career and be a wife, I quickly noticed the relational hardship of feeling like we lived separate lives. It wasn’t until December of 2022, when I was competing in my first World Cup season, that tragedy struck and I felt my whole world crumble.
